Topeka, KS (June 3, 2025) – On Tuesday evening, June 3, a two-vehicle crash with injuries occurred in Shawnee County. The collision took place around 6:20 p.m. on U.S. Highway 75 northbound at NW 86th Street, near mile marker 170.1. Authorities reported that a Saturn Vue and a Jeep Gladiator were involved, and at least one person sustained injuries as a result.
According to investigators, the driver of the Saturn, 43-year-old Andrew Smither of Topeka, was traveling eastbound on NW 86th Street when he failed to yield the right of way and struck the northbound Jeep Gladiator on its driver’s side. Smither, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with suspected minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep, 59-year-old Todd Wells of Mayetta, was reportedly uninjured and had been wearing a seatbelt. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by local services. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and more information may be released as it becomes available.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident. We wish a full and swift recovery to Mr. Smither and offer support to all families involved.
Failure to Yield Accidents in Kansas
Failure to yield is a leading cause of crashes at intersections and junctions across the country. According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), failure-to-yield violations contribute significantly to severe injury crashes, especially at high-speed roadways like highways. These types of accidents often result in side-impact collisions, which are among the most dangerous due to reduced protection in vehicle side structures.
Understanding the risks associated with right-of-way errors can help raise awareness and reduce future incidents. Whether due to distraction, misjudgment, or unfamiliarity with traffic flow, failing to yield remains a persistent issue on Kansas roads.
