Augusta, KS (October 2, 2025) – In the early morning hours of Thursday, October 2, a two-vehicle crash was reported on US-54 near mile marker 232.9, about two miles west of Augusta. The accident occurred around 1:51 a.m. when a 2002 Ford Ranger rear-ended a 2023 Ram 2500 pickup. One person was seriously injured in the crash.
According to investigators, the Ford Ranger, driven by 39-year-old Derek M. Berry of Augusta, was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it failed to slow and struck the rear of the Ram pickup, driven by 47-year-old Luke W. Grimes of Andover. After the collision, the Ford left the roadway, entered the south ditch, and rolled multiple times, ejecting Berry from the vehicle. Berry was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Wesley Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. Grimes was not injured. Emergency responders and law enforcement remained on the scene, and the vehicles were removed by Dave’s Towing. The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Berry and his family during this difficult time, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Speeding-Related Accidents in Kansas
Speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious crashes in Kansas and across the country. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding is a factor in nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities nationwide. Drivers who exceed the speed limit or travel too fast for conditions face a much higher risk of losing control, being unable to stop in time, and causing devastating collisions. These accidents often result in severe injuries, vehicle rollovers, and preventable fatalities.
