Butler County, KS – Three Injured in I-35 Crash

Butler County, KS (April 19, 2025) – On Saturday, April 19, around 1:30 p.m., a two-vehicle crash occurred on northbound I-35 at mile marker 72.5 in Butler County, under the jurisdiction of the Kansas Turnpike Authority. The collision involved a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu and a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas. Authorities have confirmed that injuries were reported in the crash, which did not involve a hit and run or police pursuit.

According to investigators, the crash happened when the Chevrolet Malibu, traveling northbound, lost control, spun out, and struck a wall. The second vehicle, a Volkswagen Atlas, was unable to slow down in time and collided with the Malibu. Three occupants were in the Malibu at the time: driver Jonathan Pope, 38, of Augusta, who sustained no apparent injuries; Lanora Gonzalez, 43, also of Augusta, who was transported to Wesley Hospital with a possible injury; and a 4-year-old child, Elijiah Pope, who was also taken to Wesley with suspected minor injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen, Brenda Esnough-Buhse, 55, of Forney, Texas, was uninjured. Emergency services responded to the scene, and both vehicles were towed by Andover Towing. Traffic in the area was likely disrupted during the investigation and cleanup. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Rear-End Crashes and Following Distance on Highways

Butler County, KS – Three Injured in I-35 Crash

Rear-end collisions remain one of the most common types of roadway accidents, often resulting from following another vehicle too closely or failing to react in time during sudden stops. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 29% of all car crashes in the U.S. are rear-end collisions. Safe following distances and alert driving are critical, especially on high-speed roads like the Kansas Turnpike, where reduced reaction time can result in serious injuries or worse. Even a brief lapse in attention or adverse conditions can lead to dangerous outcomes.
