The crash involved a southbound Freightliner truck and a northbound Honda motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a 22-year-old Coffeyville man, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
According to investigators, the driver of the 2012 Freightliner, 38-year-old Derek A. Taggart of Altamont, was traveling southbound on County Road 4300 when he attempted to make a left-hand turn into a driveway. As he did so, a 1998 Honda V75 motorcycle, driven by 22-year-old Wyatt T. Johnson, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. Taggart was uninjured and remained at the scene. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Wyatt Johnson. We mourn his loss and hope for comfort and peace for those affected by this tragedy.
Motorcycle Fatalities and Helmet Use in Kansas
Motorcycle accidents remain one of the most deadly types of traffic crashes, particularly when helmets are not used. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), helmets are estimated to be 37% effective in preventing motorcycle fatalities. Despite their proven effectiveness, Kansas does not have a universal helmet law, and many riders continue to operate without this crucial protection. Tragically, accidents like the one involving Wyatt Johnson serve as sobering reminders of the risks motorcyclists face every day.
