Frontenac, KS (June 23, 2025) – A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred early Monday morning, June 23, at approximately 7:00 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 69 and U.S. Highway 160, near the north edge of Frontenac in Crawford County. The collision claimed the life of a 21-year-old man from Girard.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Tyler Joseph Castagno of Pittsburg was driving a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 southbound on U.S. 69 when he failed to stop at a red traffic signal at the intersection of E 590th Avenue (West North Country Road). His vehicle struck an eastbound 2022 Kia Soul driven by 21-year-old Matthew Jeffrey Westhoff-Strode of Girard. Westhoff-Strode, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body was transported by Frontier Forensics. Castagno, who was also unrestrained, did not sustain any injuries in the crash. Both vehicles were towed by Diskin’s Auto Tow to a lot in Girard. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Matthew Westhoff-Strode during this tragic time.
Red-Light Violations and Intersection Fatalities in Kansas
Running red lights is one of the most dangerous driving behaviors and a major cause of fatal crashes at intersections. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), red-light running killed 1,109 people and injured over 100,000 in the U.S. in a single recent year. Many of these incidents involve drivers who are young, inexperienced, or distracted. The risk of fatal injury increases significantly when seat belts are not used, as was the case in this crash near Frontenac.
When someone is killed due to another driver’s negligence—such as running a red light—the victim’s family may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. These claims can provide compensation for funeral expenses, lost income, and emotional suffering.
