Gray County, KS (June 23, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision occurred Monday evening, June 23, at approximately 6:56 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 56 and K-23 in Gray County. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Logan M. Spooner of Ulysses was driving a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 northbound on K-23 when he failed to yield the right of way at the U56 junction. His vehicle entered the intersection and collided with a westbound 2023 Peterbilt semi-truck driven by 66-year-old Guadalupe Rodriguez, also of Ulysses. Spooner sustained suspected serious injuries and was transported to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Rodriguez was not injured. Both vehicles were insured and removed from the scene by local towing services. The Dodge was towed by Perfection Auto Work, while the semi-truck was removed by Southwest Towing. The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.

Our thoughts are with Logan Spooner and his family, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Intersection Crashes and Right-of-Way Violations in Kansas

Intersections are high-risk areas for vehicle crashes, particularly when drivers fail to obey traffic controls or misjudge the speed of cross traffic. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) estimates that over 50% of injury or fatality crashes occur at or near intersections. Failing to yield the right of way is one of the most common contributing factors in these incidents. In rural areas like Gray County, higher speeds and limited visibility at intersections increase the severity of crashes.
