Kansas City, KS (June 18, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash occurred Wednesday afternoon, June 18, at approximately 3:23 p.m. on northbound I-635 near milepost 8.2, just north of 27th Street in Wyandotte County. The crash involved a Ford SUV and a Freightliner truck. One individual was taken to the hospital with suspected minor injuries.
According to investigators, 31-year-old Miguel A. Escareno Perez of Overland Park was driving a 2009 Ford Escape northbound in the left (#1) lane of I-635 when he lost control of the vehicle on a wet roadway. A 2022 Freightliner truck, driven by 56-year-old Robert Amador of Sedgwick and traveling in the right (#3) lane, was unable to avoid the sliding SUV and collided with the driver’s side. Perez was transported to KU Med with suspected minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Amador was uninjured. The Ford Escape was removed from the scene by Alandon. No lane closures or major traffic disruptions were reported. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
We send our best wishes to Mr. Perez for a full and swift recovery.
Wet Roads and Vehicle Control in Kansas Crashes
Rain and wet pavement are leading contributors to traffic accidents in Kansas and across the U.S. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), wet pavement conditions account for nearly 70% of weather-related crashes annually. Reduced traction, longer stopping distances, and hydroplaning all increase the likelihood of losing control—especially at highway speeds. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert when road conditions are poor.
