Perry, KS (July 20, 2025) — On Sunday morning around 11:00 a.m., a motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 24 near mile marker 386.4, approximately 540 feet west of U.S. 59 in Jefferson County. The crash involved a westbound Harley-Davidson motorcycle and an eastbound Nissan Frontier. Two individuals were transported to the hospital with suspected serious injuries.
According to investigators, the motorcyclist, identified as 56-year-old Dwight O. Mewes of Ogden, braked suddenly for a vehicle ahead of him and lost control. His motorcycle slid into the path of an oncoming Nissan Frontier, driven by 75-year-old Jerry L. Steinbach of Topeka. Steinbach was not injured, but a passenger in the Frontier, 64-year-old Sandra L. Brokmann, also of Topeka, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Mewes, who was wearing a helmet, was also transported to Stormont Vail with serious injuries. Emergency responders were on the scene, and the area was temporarily affected by traffic delays as crews cleared the crash site. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
Our thoughts are with Dwight Mewes and Sandra Brokmann as they recover from their injuries. We extend our best wishes to them and their families during this difficult time.
Motorcycle Accidents in Kansas
Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable drivers on the road. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, motorcycle crashes made up nearly 13% of all traffic fatalities in the state in recent years. Lack of protection and reduced visibility make motorcycle accidents particularly severe, often resulting in serious or fatal injuries. Even when wearing helmets and taking safety precautions, riders face a high risk when sharing the road with larger vehicles.
