Saint John, KS (June 16, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle occurred on Monday, June 16, at approximately 12:42 p.m. along U.S. Highway 281 near milepost 79 in Stafford County, just north of 5th Avenue. According to crash reports, the collision resulted in one individual sustaining suspected serious injuries. The injured party was transported to the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus for medical treatment.
Authorities say the crash happened when a 2019 Ford Ranger, driven by 63-year-old David Wayne Peevyhouse of Saint John, was traveling northbound on U281 and attempted to turn left into a parking lot at 329 N U281. Peevyhouse turned directly in front of a southbound 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by 68-year-old William J. Norris, also of Saint John. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the truck. The Ford Ranger came to a stop in the southbound lanes, while the motorcycle came to rest in the west ditch. Norris was wearing a helmet and eye protection at the time of the crash. Peevyhouse reported no injuries. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, and the motorcycle was removed by Nick’s Cycle. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident, and more information may be released as it becomes available.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Norris and his loved ones during this difficult time. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Left-Turn Accidents and Motorcycle Safety in Kansas
Left-turn accidents remain one of the most dangerous scenarios for motorcyclists. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 42% of fatal motorcycle crashes involving another vehicle occur when a car is making a left turn and fails to see or yield to the motorcycle. Due to their smaller size, motorcycles are often overlooked in a driver’s field of vision or misjudged in speed and distance. Even with helmets and protective gear, riders face a high risk of serious injury or death in such collisions.
