Wichita, KS (July 28, 2025) – On Monday afternoon, July 28, a serious two-vehicle crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. on southbound Interstate 135 near E. Lincoln Street at mile marker 5.6 in Sedgwick County. The crash sent multiple individuals, including several children, to the hospital after both vehicles left the roadway and ended up in a nearby canal. One of the vehicles rolled during the incident.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2017 Subaru Forester was traveling in the third lane of I-135 southbound when it attempted to change lanes and collided with a 2016 Honda Odyssey that was in the center lane. After the impact, the Subaru rotated and struck the eastern barrier wall before rolling into a canal. The Honda also entered the canal but remained upright. The driver of the Subaru, 26-year-old Hayleigh Nakole Thurman of Wichita, sustained suspected serious injuries and was transported to Via Christi St. Francis. A 2-year-old passenger in her vehicle, Talyah Carter, was taken to the same hospital with suspected minor injuries. Several occupants of the Honda, including driver Brittany Amber Drummond and four passengers, were transported to Wesley Medical Center, though none reported visible injuries at the scene. All individuals were wearing safety restraints.
We extend our thoughts to everyone affected by this crash, especially those hospitalized. We wish them a full and swift recovery.
Lane Change Crashes a Growing Concern in Kansas

Unsafe lane changes are a common factor in many serious traffic accidents across Kansas. According to data from the Kansas Department of Transportation, lane-change-related collisions accounted for thousands of crashes in recent years, often leading to rollover incidents, secondary impacts, and severe injuries. These crashes are frequently linked to driver distraction, misjudgment of space, or failure to check blind spots. The risks are even higher on multi-lane highways where traffic moves at high speeds.
