Common Catastrophic Injuries

A catastrophic injury is classified in a medical setting as an injury that has or will likely cause a permanent disability or consequence, or one that is life-threatening. In a legal setting, a catastrophic injury is usually described as an injury that prevents the patient from holding gainful employment.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the term used to describe damage to the brain, often suffered as a result of physical force. Typically, a TBI is caused by the impact of a head with an object, such as the windshield or dashboard of a car. In such cases, the injury is considered to be a closed-head injury. A TBI can also be caused by a penetrating head injury, which is an open-head injury. Closed-head injuries present unique challenges in litigation since people often show no obvious external symptoms of injury, even though the damage to the brain can be severe.

Third-Degree Burn Injuries

Among the most painful and severe of injuries, burn injuries can lead to a wide range of health problems, including disfigurement, nerve damage, and chronic pain. There is also the anxiety and stress that burn victims go through due to the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) they typically develop from the horrendous injury.

Any number of accidents can result in a burn injury, including but not limited to the following:

  • Explosions
  • House fires
  • Dangerous chemical spills
  • Electrical fires
  • Product malfunctions
  • Motor vehicle collisions
  • Defective products

Because of the severity of burn injuries and the required amount of medical treatment, medical bills and other expenses often add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars and can be a significant financial burden on the victim and their loved ones. We have extensive experience helping victims secure the compensation they need.

Spinal Cord Damage & Paralysis

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling. Frequent causes of damage are trauma (car accidents, gunshots, falls, etc.) or disease (polio, spina bifida, Friedreich’s Ataxia, etc.). The spinal cord does not have to be severed for a loss of function to occur. In fact, in most people with SCI, the spinal cord is intact, but the damage to it results in loss of functioning.

The most common cause of spinal cord injuries is motor vehicle crashes. Falls and sports injuries are also associated with damage to the spinal cord.

There are two main types of paralysis:

  • Paraplegia: Loss of the use of the legs and lower body. Such injuries mainly occur when damage to the spine occurs below the first thoracic vertebrae.
  • Quadriplegia: Loss of use of both legs and arms. This type of injury often occurs when damage to the spine occurs above the first thoracic vertebrae.

Amputations

The loss of an arm or leg in an accident is a traumatic, life-changing event.

People lose limbs in all types of accidents, including:

  • Construction accidents
  • Machinery accidents
  • Falling accidents
  • Truck accidents
  • Motorcycle accidents
  • Workplace accidents

An amputation can affect a life in so many ways: emotionally, psychologically, and socially. If you or a loved had an arm or leg amputated after an accident or lost a limb due to someone else’s negligent or reckless behavior, contact Bretz Injury Law right away.
