Edgerton, KS (April 29, 2024) – One person was killed and another was seriously hurt after a head-on crash involving a commercial truck in the Edgerton area on Sunday, April 28. The deadly accident took place on Interstate 35 NB near Edgerton Road early that morning around 3:20 a.m. Local reports revealed that 27-year-old Matthew E. Karabas of Monroe, NJ, was traveling south in the northbound lanes of the interstate at the time of the crash. 

At the same time, 29-year-old Garrido S. Chinea of Kansas City, MO, was traveling north in a 2024 Freightliner semi-truck. The two vehicles collided head-on. Karabas was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center by ambulance in critical condition. A passenger in the Jeep, 22-year-old Eric M. Diaz of Melbourne, FL, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported in the crash. The area was temporarily closed while emergency responders were present. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly accident is being managed by local law enforcement officials, and more updates will be provided as it continues.
