Lawrence, KS - Mack Truck Blowout Causes Injury Crash on I-70

Lawrence, KS (May 25, 2024) – On Friday, May 24, there were confirmed injuries after a crash involving a Mack truck in the Lawrence area. The incident was reported on Interstate 70 near mile marker 199.6 that afternoon around 3:47 p.m.  Local reports revealed that a 34-year-old Spencer Banks of Topeka was traveling westbound on the interstate in a 2008 Mack truck when the rig experienced a tire blowout.

The blowout caused Banks to lose control of the truck. A 2015 Subaru Forrester driven by 19-year-old Jonah Patten of Statesboro, GA, was trying to pass the vehicle in the left lane when the blowout occurred. The Mack truck hit the Subaru, pushing the car into a barrier wall. Debris related to the crash smashed a 2010 Honda Civic driven by 23-year-old Haley Wiercinski of Lake Quivira. Local reports indicated that Patten and Wiercinski were hurt in the collision, and both were treated by attending medical personnel. No further information on the accident is currently available. Local law enforcement officials are handling the ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
