Oakley, KS - Passenger Hurt in Pileup Crash at US-84 & US-40

Oakley, KS (June 3, 2024) – One person was injured after a multi-vehicle collision in the Oakley area on Sunday, June 2. The incident was reported at the intersection of US-84 and US-40 that afternoon, around 4 p.m. Local reports indicated that 83-year-old Verna M. Wright of Oakley was traveling northbound on US-84 in a 1993 Dodge Durango.

Traffic on US-40 was stopped because of an oversized load carrying a windmill blade onto the highway. It was then that Wright rear-ended a 2024 Dodge Hornet driven by 68-year-old Michael Gordon Briese of Kramer, ND. The impact pushed the Hornet into the back of a 2012 GMC Denali XL driven by 22-year-old Brooks Kaipo Poaha Tancayo of Colby. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene. A passenger in the Hornet, 58-year-old Laura Kevel Briese of Sun Tan Valley, AZ, was hurt and transported by ambulance to Logan County Hospital for the treatment of sustained injuries. No other information on the incident is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident is being managed by local law enforcement officials.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
