Shawnee, KS - One Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-435

Shawnee, KS (April 10, 2024) – A pileup collision in the Shawnee area on Tuesday, April 9, left one driver with confirmed injuries. The collision took place on Interstate 435 near mile marker 5 at Midland Drive in Johnson County early that morning around 7:50 a.m. Local reports indicated that five vehicles collided at the scene.

It was later reported that a 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck driven by Emily D. Pittman of Platte City, MO was headed southbound on the interstate ahead of a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup driven by  23-year-old Jackson Welker of Kansas City. Pittman began to slow down due to traffic on the roadway when she was hit from behind by Welker. This caused a chain-reaction crash where Pittman hit the rear of a 2013 Ford Fusion driven by Melissa J. Nelson of Clearmont, MO, which then hit the rear of a 2013 Toyota Camry driven by Michael F. Tomandl of Shawnee.

A fifth vehicle, a 2020 Buick Envision driven by 46-year-old Jill D. Dickson of Kansas City, then hit the rear of Welker’s pickup. Only the driver of the Fusion required treatment, and she was transported to Overland Park Regional Hospital by ambulance. No further information has been provided at this time. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident is being managed by local law enforcement officials.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
