Lawrence, KS (July 18, 2025) — A fatal three-vehicle crash occurred just before 1 p.m. Friday on westbound U.S. Highway 40 near mile marker 370.6 in Douglas County, according to the Kansas Turnpike Authority. The accident involved a 2012 Ford Focus, a 2021 Ram Promaster, and a 1965 Ford F100. One person was killed, and multiple others were injured. Authorities confirmed that the collision involved a hit-and-run and was not connected to a police pursuit.
According to investigators, the driver of the Ford Focus, traveling westbound, veered into the eastbound lanes of U.S. 40. The Focus first clipped the rear driver-side tire of the Ram Promaster, whose driver had attempted to avoid the oncoming vehicle by swerving into a ditch. The Focus continued westbound in the wrong lane and struck the Ford F100 head-on. The driver of the F100, 51-year-old Leonard Schupp of Oskaloosa, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 15-year-old passenger, Kate Schupp, was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with serious injuries. The at-fault driver, 29-year-old Zachary Odom of Tecumseh, and the Ram driver, 54-year-old Kieron Nicholson of Memphis, were also taken to the hospital with suspected injuries. Emergency responders closed the area temporarily, and the crash remains under active investigation.
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Leonard Schupp. We also send our thoughts and best wishes for a full recovery to Kate Schupp, Zachary Odom, and Kieron Nicholson as they continue to receive care.
