Chanute, KS (April 3, 2025) – A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred Thursday morning at around 8:04 a.m. in Neosho County. The accident took place on U.S. Highway 169 at mile marker 36 southbound, approximately 0.2 miles north of 70th Road. One person was killed, and another sustained injuries.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2021 Nissan Kicks was traveling northbound when it veered into the southbound lane. A southbound 2009 GMC Sierra attempted to avoid the crash by swerving left, but the two vehicles collided in an offset head-on impact near the center of the roadway. Both vehicles sustained significant damage.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision. The driver of the Nissan, identified as 55-year-old Janee M. Umbarger of Chanute, Kansas, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was transported to Countryside Funeral Home. The driver of the GMC, 76-year-old Carrol E. Clark of Piqua, Kansas, was taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. Authorities confirmed Umbarger was wearing a seatbelt, while Clark was not. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
