Kansas City, KS (September 20, 2025) – On Saturday evening, September 20, a multi-vehicle crash occurred on eastbound I-670 near milepost 0.8, about 500 feet west of Genessee Street in Wyandotte County. The collision happened around 5:39 p.m. and resulted in multiple reported injuries.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, traffic in the center lane was stopped when a 2002 Mercedes-Benz S-Class driven by 72-year-old David A. Griffith of Lawrence failed to stop in time. The Mercedes rear-ended a 2021 Kia K5, pushing it forward into a 2007 Toyota 4Runner and then into a 2020 Ford Expedition. The crash left several people injured. Kia driver Hannah M. McDonald, 38, of Leavenworth, was transported to Kansas University Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. Her passenger, 36-year-old Leanna R. Malic of Kansas City, KS, was also taken to the hospital with suspected minor injuries. Additionally, Diane L. Griffith, 69, of Cape Girardeau, MO, a passenger in the Mercedes, was hospitalized with suspected minor injuries. Other drivers and passengers involved, including those in the Toyota and Ford, were not injured. Emergency crews responded, and multiple vehicles were towed from the scene. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families. We wish them strength and a full recovery during this difficult time.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Kansas
Multi-vehicle crashes, especially on congested interstates, often occur when traffic slows or stops suddenly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rear-end collisions account for nearly 30% of all crashes in the United States, with many involving chain-reaction impacts like this one. These accidents can be particularly dangerous because each additional vehicle hit increases the risk of injuries and severe property damage. Drivers are urged to leave adequate space between vehicles and stay alert to avoid contributing to such collisions.
