According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound on Linn Valley Boulevard when it crossed the center of the roadway and struck a southbound 2024 Polaris UTV. The motorcycle was operated by 75-year-old Dennis D. Bland of Linn Valley. Bland, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to KU Medical Center in Kansas City. The UTV was driven by 22-year-old Jenna R. Bethune of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Two additional passengers, Wayne E. Scott, 54, and Stephanie S. Jessen, 53, both of Linn Valley, were also in the UTV. None of the UTV occupants reported injuries. No safety restraints were in use at the time of the crash. The motorcycle was towed by Morse’s Auto Salvage; the UTV was removed by its owner. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Bland and his loved ones. We wish him strength and a full recovery in the days ahead.
Motorcycle Safety and Lane Departure Accidents in Kansas
Lane departures and failure to maintain lane control are frequent factors in serious motorcycle crashes, particularly at night. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), older motorcycle riders are at increased risk of severe injury or death in crashes, often due to declining reaction times and lack of protective gear. Helmets play a critical role in reducing the severity of head injuries, and their absence significantly raises the risk of fatal outcomes. In Kansas, helmet laws do not apply to riders over the age of 18, but safety experts strongly urge all motorcyclists to wear protective gear regardless of age.
