Norton County, KS (July 4, 2025) – On Friday afternoon, July 4, a deadly two-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 2:42 p.m. on U.S. Highway 36 near milepost 105, about 8.5 miles west of U.S. 283 in Norton County. The crash involved a Pontiac G6 and a Honda Odyssey and resulted in one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Pontiac G6, driven by 21-year-old Darian W. Marston of McCook, Nebraska, was headed eastbound when it hydroplaned, lost control, and collided head-on with a westbound Honda Odyssey. Marston, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Pontiac, identified as Lily Sheldon, sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to Norton County Hospital before being transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. The driver of the Odyssey, 50-year-old David Chappell of Augusta, Kansas, and three passengers—Lynn Chappell (45), Dixie Labreau (79), and Bryson Chappell (11)—were all treated for suspected minor injuries. Labreau was also transferred to Good Samaritan for further care. Emergency crews responded promptly, and both vehicles were removed from the scene by New Look towing. The crash remains under investigation by KHP Trooper K130.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Darian Marston during this difficult time. Our thoughts are also with the injured and their loved ones, and we wish them all a full and speedy recovery.
Dangers of Hydroplaning on Kansas Roads
Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds between a vehicle’s tires and the road surface, causing a loss of traction and control. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), weather-related crashes account for roughly 21% of all vehicle crashes in the U.S., with wet pavement contributing to the majority. Drivers should reduce speed during rainy conditions and ensure their tires are in good condition to minimize the risk of hydroplaning. Tragic collisions like this highlight the importance of cautious driving during inclement weather.
