Dangers of Stopped Vehicles on Highways

Sedgwick County, KS – Injury Crash on I-135

When vehicles stop in active lanes of traffic, the risk of a serious crash increases dramatically. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), nearly 12% of all highway fatalities involve vehicles that are stopped on the roadway, either due to breakdowns or illegal parking. Drivers approaching at highway speeds often have little time to react, leading to rear-end or chain-reaction collisions. Even when not directly involved in a crash, stopped vehicles can contribute to sudden lane changes and unsafe driving maneuvers from other motorists.
