Severy, KS (August 1, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 400 and Kansas Highway 99, approximately one mile west of Severy, resulted in injuries late Friday morning. The accident occurred at approximately 11:37 a.m. when a northbound Ford Five Hundred failed to yield at a stop sign and collided with a westbound Buick Enclave. The impact sent both vehicles into the northwest corner of the intersection. One driver and one juvenile passenger were transported to nearby hospitals.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Ford, driven by 40-year-old Elizabeth A. Botts of Neodesha, failed to stop at the marked intersection before striking the Buick, which was carrying three occupants. Botts, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, sustained suspected serious injuries and was taken to Wesley Medical Center. In the Buick, the driver, 45-year-old Myra L. Barnett of Fredonia, and one of her sons, 16-year-old Kamden L. Barnett, were reportedly unharmed. However, her younger son, 13-year-old Quaid Barnett, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Eureka Hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Starbuck Trucking. An active investigation is underway to determine all contributing factors in the collision.

Our thoughts are with Elizabeth Botts and Quaid Barnett as they recover from their injuries. We extend our support and well wishes to their families during this difficult time.

Failure to Yield Remains a Leading Cause of Intersection Crashes

Severy, KS – Two Injured in U400 and K99 Crash

Crashes involving failure to yield at stop signs or traffic signals continue to be a significant safety concern across Kansas. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), failure to yield was among the top five contributing circumstances in motor vehicle collisions statewide in 2023. These incidents often occur at rural intersections, where high speeds and limited visibility can increase the likelihood of serious or fatal outcomes. Drivers are urged to exercise heightened caution and ensure full stops at all marked intersections to prevent avoidable tragedies.

The aftermath of a crash can leave victims overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn.
