Wichita, KS (August 13, 2025) – On Wednesday evening, August 13, a two-vehicle crash on northbound I-235 left two drivers injured just south of Zoo Boulevard in Sedgwick County. The collision occurred around 5:20 p.m. when one pickup truck failed to slow in time for stopped traffic ahead, striking another pickup from behind.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 60-year-old Michael Nelson of Newton was traveling in the left lane behind a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado operated by 56-year-old Steven Palecki of Marion. Palecki slowed for stopped traffic when Nelson’s vehicle struck the rear of his truck. Nelson suffered suspected minor injuries and was transported to St. Francis Hospital, while Palecki reported possible injuries but was not transported. Nelson’s Silverado was towed from the scene by Miller’s Tow and Recovery. The crash caused traffic delays in the area as emergency crews responded. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured drivers, and we wish them both a smooth and full recovery.
Following Too Closely and Rear-End Collisions in Kansas
Rear-end crashes are among the most common types of accidents in Kansas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that following too closely is a leading cause of these collisions, especially during congested traffic conditions. Even at lower speeds, failing to maintain a safe following distance can lead to significant damage and injuries. Drivers are encouraged to maintain at least a three-second gap between their vehicle and the one in front, adjusting for weather, visibility, and traffic flow.
If you have been injured in a rear-end collision, it is important to protect your rights and understand your options for recovery. The experienced attorneys at Bretz Injury Law can help you seek the compensation you deserve. Contact our office today at 620-524-0080 for a free consultation.
