Sherman County, KS (April 14, 2025) – A devastating mass-casualty crash occurred on Friday, March 14, involving more than 70 vehicles on Interstate 70 near milepost 28 in eastern Sherman County, approximately nine miles east of Goodland. The multi-vehicle collision, which spanned both directions of the highway near the Sherman County Road 30 overpass, resulted in eight fatalities and forty-six injuries, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after the first call came in at approximately 3:22 p.m. CDT.
Authorities reported that a series of crashes unfolded over a 15-minute period from 3:20 to 3:35 p.m., resulting in a large-scale emergency response and temporary closure of I-70 in both directions. Among the victims were drivers and passengers from Kansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Due to the severity and scale of the incident, multiple separate crash reports were filed to document the distinct collisions within the broader event. Victims were transported to various local hospitals, while several deceased individuals were transferred to mortuary services.
