Wichita, KS (June 20, 2025) – A three-vehicle crash occurred on Friday, June 20, at approximately 5:00 p.m. on the I-135 southbound ramp to 47th Street in Sedgwick County. The collision involved two known vehicles and one unidentified tan passenger car. One individual was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a tan car—make and model unknown—was traveling southbound on I-135 when it abruptly crossed from the third lane over to the far-right (#4) lane, cutting off a 2021 Freightliner driven by 35-year-old Lawrence Michael Barnett of Wichita. Barnett swerved to avoid the unidentified vehicle and struck a guardrail. A 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 36-year-old Christopher Ray Riviere, also of Wichita, was following behind and rear-ended the Freightliner. The tan vehicle continued without stopping and remains unidentified. Both the Freightliner and the Silverado came to rest in the far-right lane. Barnett was transported to Wesley Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. Riviere was not injured. No tows were required, and no major road closures were reported. The investigation remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Barnett, and we wish him a smooth and full recovery.
Dangers of Improper Lane Changes in Kansas
Improper or sudden lane changes are a leading factor in highway crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that unsafe lane changes contribute significantly to multi-vehicle accidents, particularly when drivers fail to signal or check blind spots. These abrupt movements can force others to take evasive action, often resulting in collisions with guardrails or trailing vehicles—as seen in this crash on I-135.
If you’ve been injured in a crash caused by another driver’s careless actions—especially in a case involving an unidentified vehicle—you may still be entitled to compensation through your own insurance policy’s uninsured motorist coverage. The legal team at Bretz Injury Law understands how to navigate these complex cases and is here to help.
